Riviera Maya gets a much-needed CFE power boost to its electrical grid

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Over the weekend, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) put a new much-needed Riviera Maya substation into operation. The new Zac Nicté Electrical Substation (SE) is located in the municipality of Playa del Carmen.

According to the CFE, it is a key facility to reinforce the transmission system in one of the areas of greatest energy growth in the southeast.

The stabilized power grid will service over 700,000 people throughout Playa del Carmen. April 19, 2026.

The substation was officially put into operation over the weekend, which, according to the CFE, is part of  the National Transmission Network expansion project, a project to strengthen the national power system.

In a press release, the CFE emphasized that the objective is to increase the quality of electrical energy for the benefit of 708,788 electrical users in this area of the peninsular region.

“The CFE reiterates its commitment to users to maintain the continuity of electrical service, working to maintain high levels of quality, reliability and the capacity of the National Electric System,” they said.

Earlier this month, the CFE  announced the installation of a new BLM C 1 capacitor bank at 115,000 volts within the Balam (BLM) electrical substation in Cancun and then a second in the Bonampak area of Cancun.

The additional substations are part of an $8.1 billion USD project by the Government of Mexico to improve the country’s electrical system.
