Riviera Maya, Q.R. — On June 1, the state’s operational committee was announced with the official start of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season. State Governor, who heads the committee, says the goal is to protect the lives of the nearly 1.8 million residents.
“Every decision we make has a purpose. It is to safeguard the lives of nearly 1.8 million people who live in the 11 municipalities of our state and the thousands of visitors and tourists who come to Quintana Roo, the Mexican Caribbean, the World Capital of Vacations,” she said.
She said her government is one that plans, organizes and coordinates and does not improvise.

Governor Lezama said for the Atlantic this year, there between 11 and 15 tropical cyclones are forecast for the Basin.
During the Monday meeting, committee members listened to the cyclone season forecast by Conagua Director Erika Ramírez Méndez and the head of the CFE contingency plan, Héctor Raúl Aguilar Valenzuela.
The Operational Committee is made up of 15 specialized subcommittees formed by agencies and institutions from all levels of government. They are responsible for coordinating preventive actions, strengthening response capacity and safeguarding the life, property and security of residents.
Governor Mara Lezama highlighted that there is an operational force made up of 3,550 brigade members from the state public administration and 476 brigade members from the municipal Civil Protection units, in addition to more than 300 operational vehicles, specialized equipment for rescue, cleaning and monitoring, drones, electric generators and a Mobile Operations Center.
Additionally, a network of 834 temporary shelters was established throughout the state with the capacity to serve more than 75,000 people. Of these, 77 are newly opened shelters with immediate capacity for more than 11,000 people. Sixteen pet shelters are also planned in nine municipalities.
In terms of health, the state has 204 first-level health centers, hospitals, operating rooms, ambulances, laboratories, specialized medical personnel, and a helicopter for emergency care requiring urgent transfers.

The Governor acknowledged the collaboration of federal institutions such as the National Guard, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the National Water Commission (Conagua), as well as the armed forces and municipal authorities, to strengthen the response capacity during the season.
