Island driver suffers severe burns coming into contact with live electrical wires during Isla Mujeres pole collapses

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — An island resident remains in hospital after accidently making contact with live electrical wires. The man was driving his motorcycle Monday when he came into contact with live wires that had fallen due to a collapsed CFE pole.

Four vehicles were reported burned in the Monday afternoon incident August 17, 2026.

The male driver of the motorcycle received severe burns during the incident that also caught several vehicles on fire. Firemen were on scene Monday to attend to reports of the accident and the burning vehicles.

Three motorcycles and one car caught fire Monday due to live wires that landed on them after a deteriorating concrete CFE pole broke into two.

The motorcycle accident happened Monday afternoon on Jesús Martínez Ross Avenue due to the concrete CFE pole collapse. It was the second CFE pole collapse on the island of Isla Mujeres that day.

On Monday, two poles owned by the CFE collapsed and fell onto residential roads in different areas. A large portion of the island was without electricity due to the broken poles that dangled over public roadways and left live wires in contact with the street.

According to available information, the afternoon accident happened when one set of those live wires fell onto a public road just as the motorcycle driver was passing by.

The bike immediately caught fire, severely injuring the driver. At least four other vehicles also caught fire during the afternoon island incident.

Civil Protection and local firemen along with Public Safety officers and CFE technicians were at the scene of the fire. There has not been any official statement released by Isla Mujeres officials regarding the Monday afternoon CFE pole collapses.
