Riviera Maya, Q.R.– The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) says vandalism was responsible for the massive blackout across the peninsula. Crews were dispersed Monday night to restore power in the states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Chiapas.
The loss of electricity started around 8:00 p.m. in Cancun and continued throughout the night and into Tuesday morning. The Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) reported Tuesday that the massive outage was the result of vandalism to two high-voltage lines.
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) reports that, following damage to two high-voltage lines caused by acts of vandalism, power supply has been fully restored to affected users in the states of Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche, and Chiapas.
Specialized personnel were deployed to the site and carried out continuous repair and restoration work, they said. From the outset, the CFE said they maintained close communication and coordination with state and municipal governments to keep the public informed.
Early Tuesday morning, the CFE said they had restored service to 25% of the affected customers in the states of Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Yucatán, and Campeche.
The cause of the massive blackout, they said, was identified as vandalism targeting the insulators on both 400 kV high-voltage lines.
