Cozumel, Q.R. — Government officials have confirmed an agreement that will allow the donation of land for a new island hospital. The deal, which was made Thursday, provides the land needed to start construction.
Governor Mara Lezama reported Thursday that the Technical Council of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) approved the donation of a 40,000 square meter plot of land. The land has been donated by the Cozumel City Council to build a new General Zone Hospital on the island.

The approval was agreed upon during a meeting Thursday that included the state’s IMSS General Director Zoé Robledo. According to Governor Lezama, the deal allows both sides to formalize the donation contract and in the development process.
Lezama explained that the new hospital will cost 2.7 billion pesos to build and equip. Once open, the IMSS’s capacity in Cozumel will increase from 25 to 90 beds, 65 more than currently available.
Mara Lezama pointed out that the Director of Administration of the IMSS, Borsalino González Andrade, announced that, based on the population projected for 2026, the availability will increase from 0.47 to 1.71 beds per thousand beneficiaries.
The new IMSS hospital for Cozumel will offer emergency services, inpatient care, surgery, outpatient specialty consultations, obstetric and gynecological care, and neonatal care, in addition to diagnostic and clinical support services.
It also aims to reduce patient referrals and transfers and improve continuity of care between primary and secondary levels.
Family medicine services will continue to be offered at the current IMSS facilities in Cozumel, which have eight consultation rooms operating in morning and afternoon shifts. This will expand the medical response capacity in the municipality.
