Cozumel, Q.R. — Four people were left with injuries after a section of property belonging to a Cozumel hotel collapsed. The accident happened Thursday evening at a hotel in the southern part of the island while several guests were taking sunset photos.

According to preliminary reports, a ground collapse at the Occidental Cozumel hotel created a large sinkhole in a tiled area near the hotel’s swimming pool. The area that sunk bordered on the beach of the hotel property.
Hotel staff say the hole created from the collapse is several meters across and at least two meters deep.
The four people injured were all men reported to be domestic tourists. Two ambulances arrived to make the hospital transfers.
Other guests at the hotel reported on social media that they heard a cracking noise, at which time they ran. Seconds later, the hole appeared, causing the four tourists to fall in.
The large crack is reported to stretch several meters long from the shower to the pool. The ground collapse itself happened behind an orange pillar that supported a pool shower head.
The area where the sinkhole occurred has been cordoned off by hotel staff as a precautionary measure. According to employees, the concrete support column for a nearby outdoor shower was left dangling over the hole that formed.

Local authorities have not released any comments on the collapse. An official cause for the crack and subsequent ground collapse of the hotel property remains unknown.
