FPMC continues recovery program of 1,500 Chankanaab coral fragments

Cozumel, Q.R. — Through continuous work and citizen participation, the FPMC is promoting the recovery of corals in Chankanaab. With the care of approximately 1,500 coral fragments, the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation (FPMC) continues the Coral Restoration Program.

Biologist Rafael Chacón Díaz, the Directorate of Conservation and Environmental Education (CEA), says the program focuses primarily on the recovery and care of the “elkhorn” coral (Acropora palmata), in addition to monitoring the reproduction of species such as Orbicella faveolata.

He explained that the fragments are installed in underwater tree and grid-like structures, which were installed in coordination with the organization Oceanus AC.

There, cleaning is carried out to remove algae and debris from the structures and the colonies in order to promote their growth and survival. The coral and attended to twice a week by volunteers.
