Cancun, Q.R. — After a few days of warm air, weather in Cancun jumped from winter directly into summer. Extreme temperatures across a majority of the country has included Cancun in its second heatwave of the year.

On Tuesday, Cancun Civil Protection issued a high temperature warning for residents due to an extreme heat index.

“The heat wave continues in Quintana Roo, creating hot to very hot conditions with mostly clear skies, no chance of rain, and east-southeast winds,” Protección Civil Cancun reported early Tuesday.

“Temperatures will reach between 31 and 33°C (88 and 91°F) with a heat index of up to 37°C (99°F) and an extreme UV index, increasing the risk of health problems.

“It is important to stay informed through official channels and take precautions in these conditions.”

According to the National Weather Service, “the heat index, also known as the apparent temperature, is what the temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air.”

The current heat index for the city of Cancun is “extreme caution” with heat stroke and heat exhaustion possible with extended exposure or physical activity.

Temperatures across the state are forecast to remain very hot for the rest of the week. Late Tuesday morning, State Civil Protection expanded that heat warning to include several additional areas.
