Cozumel, Q.R. — An island restaurant that was the scene of a large brawl over the weekend remains closed. The Cozumel restaurant was shut down Sunday night after taxi drivers, tourists and restaurant staff were captured in a physical altercation.

The 6:00 p.m. fight involved more than a dozen people who were videoed punching and kicking others who were down. The violent fight broke out at the centrally located seaside restaurant Sunday evening.
As a result of the fight, two people were confirmed hospitalized.
The municipal government of Cozumel said island police were on scene in response to the report of the fight on the city’s boardwalk.
The government said as a result of the incident, inspection personnel, in coordination with police officers, went to the scene and proceeded to close the establishment where the incident occurred.
Video shows at least two taxi drivers involved in the brawl, kicking and punching others and in one case, body slamming, one of the tourists to the ground.
Witnesses reported hearing the fight start over verbal abuse from the national tourists toward restaurant staff.
In response to the Sunday evening fight, personnel from the Directorate of Inspection suspended the restaurant at the intersection of Rafael E. Melgar Avenue and 5th Street.

The government of Cozumel says while the corresponding legal proceedings are underway before a civil court, “the parties involved must initiate the corresponding legal proceedings before the State Attorney General’s Office.”
