Cancun, Q.R. — An investigation into the death of a female inmate inside a Cancun prison has been started. The investigation began after a 36 year old woman who had been admitted September 3 was found hanging inside a cell.
Inmate Silvia “N” was found suspended by the neck in cell 207 shortly after 2:00 a.m. Thursday morning. She had been arrested earlier in the month in relation to a murder in the Santa Cecilia neighborhood of Cancun.
She was also alleged to have been connected to a criminal group.
Prison personnel found her dead inside her cell in the Social Reintegration Center (Cereso) of Cancun Thursday morning. She was being investigated for aggravated homicide.
According to information previously released by the State Attorney General (FGE), their investigation also connected her to gang members and the alleged theft of 130,000 pesos, events that were part of a separate criminal case.
Prison medical staff confirmed her death inside her cell. The FGE (Fiscalía General del Estado) was notified. Her death is being treated as a suicide, however, an autopsy will determine if there were any other contributing factors.
Silvia “N”, alias “La Chivis”, was originally from Cárdenas, Tabasco.
