Cozumel, Q.R. — The search continues for the second person reported lost at sea following a jet ski incident Sunday. One of the two men on the jet ski headed for the island of Cozumel was found alive during a search Wednesday.
Marina officials reported finding 28 year old José Eduardo “C” in national waters north of Isla Contoy. He was found suffering from severe dehydration and taken to a Cancun hospital.
While one person has been found, authorities say their search continues for the second person on the jet ski, 40 year old Francisco “M”.
In a statement Wednesday, the Secretariat of the Navy, acting as Coast Guard, reported locating one of the missing persons in national waters north of Isla Contoy, Quintana Roo.
This operation was carried out following efforts by the Naval Command, the Quintana Roo Public Security Secretariat, Civil Protection, and the maritime community to safeguard human life at sea, they said.
Local boatmen were alerted to the missing jet ski carrying two men Sunday by the Port Authority who asked local boaters to keep an eye open for the lost water craft.
On Wednesday, the 28 year old man was found adrift. He was located by a passing boat named Osiris, a private vessel.
“Personnel aboard a small vessel located one of the men in open water,” the Navy reported.
In their official statement, the Navy said “the rescued person was immediately transferred to the dock of the Regional Port Captaincy of Puerto Juárez where he was assessed by Naval Health personnel, finding him to have severe dehydration.
“He was subsequently handed over to a Red Cross ambulance to be transferred to a hospital in Cancun to receive specialized medical attention.”
Authorities said that inter-institutional efforts to find the second missing person continue both by sea and by air.
On Sunday, the two men left the mainland of Playa del Carmen for the island of Cozumel on a jet ski. They were reported lost at sea Sunday evening after they failed to arrive.
A search was started Sunday evening that continued into the week, locating one of the two men alive Wednesday.
Governor Mara Lezama says “the search continues intensely, with all inter-institutional efforts to locate Francisco.” She said search efforts will continue in a coordinated manner until he is found.
