Cancun, Q.R. — An American man wanted in the U.S. is being deported after he was found living in Mexico illegally. On Thursday, John Michael “N” was detained for not being able to prove his legal stay in the country.
Once in the custody of Mexican officials, authorities learned he had an outstanding arrest warrant in the state of Iowa. According to police, he is wanted by U.S. officials for drug possession, firearm charges and aggravated assault.
Police did not say how they came to learn of his illegal stay in Mexico, nor did they say how long he had been living in Cancun on the run from U.S. authorities.
“John Michael “N”—alias “Angelito”—a U.S. national, was detained for failing to provide proof of legal status in the country,” State Police reported Thursday.
As a result of investigative work and coordination between the State Investigative Police Directorate, the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), and the Secretariat of the Navy (Marina), a U.S. national was located and taken into custody in Cancun, they said.
During the operation, John Michael “N” was unable to prove his legal status in the country. The SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana de Q.Roo) said he was also found to be the subject of an active arrest warrant in the U.S. state of Iowa for offenses involving drug possession, firearms, and aggravated assault.
According to the SSC (Secretariat of Citizen Security), he was subsequently placed at the disposal of immigration, the INM (National Migration Institute — Instituto Nacional de Migración) to proceed with the appropriate immigration formalities and matters related to his extradition process.
