Fishermen drifting 11 days located by Marina rescue vessel off island of Cozumel

Cozumel, Q.R. — Marina personnel rescued four people on board a stranded fishing vessel off the island of Cozumel Saturday. The Mexican Navy reported locating the boat more than 130 nautical miles from the island.

The Marina of Mexico says personnel provided support to four people at sea after receiving a report in the Command and Control Room of the Fifth Naval Region.

According to the report, four men board fishing vessel Jupiter were stranded and drifting more than a week after their engine failed.

The four men had been at been adrift at sea for 11 days and had not managed to establish communication until the weekend.

After receiving the report, an Ocean Patrol vessel of the Mexican Navy was deployed to locate the boat carrying the four fishermen.

“The aforementioned individuals were located approximately 137 nautical miles (253 kilometers) southeast of Cozumel Island, Quintana Roo,” the Marina said in a statement.

The fishermen were provided with medical support and food during their journey return to land. Authorities did not say where the four fishermen originated.
