Cancun, Q.R. — Five kilograms of ketamine was seized from an abandoned suitcase inside the Cancun International Airport. Personnel who found the bottles said the suitcase had arrived in Cancun from a U.S. flight.
National Guard officers said they seized the five kilos of ketamine hydrochloride found inside an abandoned suitcase Tuesday. Ketamine, which is a controlled substance, is a general anesthesia which is also misused as an illicit recreational drug.
According to the National Guard, the suitcase that was found arrived on a flight from the United States Tuesday. During inspection and surveillance operations, federal agents spotted the suitcase and conducted a search, discovering the bottles inside.
The suitcase was turned over to the Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), federal officials, for an investigation to determine the exact origin and identify those involved in its transport.
Ketamine is strictly regulated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) since using, possessing, or selling it without a valid prescription from a licensed medical professional is illegal.
It is also a controlled substance in Mexico under the Mexican General Health Law (Ley General de Salud) who classifies ketamine as a Category 3 / Group III psychotropic substance.
