Riviera Maya, Q.R. — President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced the arrival of the first 12 freight locomotives for the Maya Train. The cars will be inaugurated in 2027 to improve peninsula freight cargo logistics.
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo made the announcement while visiting the state of Quintana Roo late last week. She visited the Cancun Tren Maya station where the the first 12 freight locomotives were being stored.
“We have great news. The first 12 locomotives for the Maya Train freight line have arrived, and construction is already well underway.
“In fact, these locomotives are already transporting some of the materials for the construction of the Maya Train freight line,” she reported.
Sheinbaum says the Maya Freight Train will begin operations in January 2027 as part of the strategy to strengthen rail freight transport in the southeast of the country.
She explained that tests are currently being carried out on some sections, while infrastructure work continues. Next year, operating yards will facilitate the transfer of goods to the center and north of the country.
The project includes the incorporation of high-power locomotives and a network of railway complexes that will link strategic points such as Palenque, Progreso, Poxilá, Cancun and Chetumal, strengthening the logistical connectivity of Southeast Mexico.
Her visit to the Cancun Tren Maya station was part of a recent work tour to the state of Quintana Roo. On Friday, President Sheinbaum visited the municipality of Tulum before heading north to Puerto Morelos and then Cancun.
