Cancun, Q.R. — CFE has put a new electrical substation into operation in Cancun. The extra power boost is part of an electrical improvement project for the Yucatan Peninsula.
The Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) is carrying out expansion work on the National Transmission Network (RNT). The finished project will improve power quality and operational safety in the Yucatan Peninsula.
New electrical infrastructure was commissioned with the energization of high-power electrical equipment at the Bonampak Electrical Substation of Cancun.

The CFE says the goal is to increase power quality for the benefit of 708,788 electrical services in this peninsular region. The most recent addition is part of an $8.1 billion USD project by the Government of Mexico to improve the country’s electrical grid.
Last year, the government said from 2025 to 2030, 275 new transmission lines and 524 new works in electrical substations will be built
The Government of Mexico, through the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the Ministry of Energy, announced that as part of the 2025–2030 Strengthening and Expansion Plan, the National Transmission Network will be reinforced.
That reinforcement is through an investment of $8.1 billion US dollars (USD) for the construction of 275 new transmission lines and 524 new works in electrical substations, with the objective of benefiting 50 million users nationwide.
President Claudia Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexico, compared to other countries, is interconnected and that this investment of $8.1 billion strengthens the connection of the entire Republic.
“This is a very significant investment, $8.1 billion for our country’s electrical power transmission system. Our entire country is interconnected.
“Not all countries have national interconnected systems. Some have regional ones. We do have a fully interconnected system. The interconnection to the Baja California peninsula is nearing completion.
“For years, the peninsula had its own grid, its own power plants, and there was no interconnection between San Luis Río Colorado and Mexicali. Now there is, thanks to President López Obrador.

“So, the entire country is truly interconnected with this system. There are 275 new transmission line projects and 524 substations nationwide,” she explained in a press conference in late 2025.
The government’s 2025-2030 Strengthening and Expansion Plan will also increase generation capacity by 29,074 megawatts (MW): CFE, 22,674 MW and an additional 6,400 MW from private investment.
