Tulum, Q.R. — Edgar Aguilar Rico says Tulum needs to strengthen its force with the recent departure of navy personnel. The new head of Citizen Security of Tulum says they are in the process of hiring.
At least 33 new officers are needed to strengthen municipal forces after the departure of 80 navy personnel from Tulum. Their departure prompted the Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection (SSC) to begin a process of operational strengthening with the addition of new police officers.
The new police chief reported that the current force under his command is approximately 200 officers, but at least 33 new officers are being sought to fill vacancies and strengthen the local security program.
“We need to strengthen the Tulum Armored Forces program. We’re already accepting applicants,” said Aguilar Rico. He explained that in addition to hiring new municipal officers, the support of personnel from the Ministry of National Defense is planned as part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen security in the region.

One of Aguilar Rico’s main objectives, he says, is to improve public perceptions of the municipal police.
“We want to change the perception of the police and security so that people trust us,” he stated after acknowledging ongoing problems with Transit officers extorting drivers earlier in the week.

He said that upon assuming command, he found several weaknesses within the force, not only in the morale of the officers, but also in the physical condition of the facilities. Aguilar Rico says he is working on dignifying the police facilities and contributing to restoring public confidence in the municipality.
