New Tulum Police Chief starts work in Traffic to curb officer extortion

Tulum, Q.R. — The new head of Tulum security Edgar Aguilar Rico has already implemented an inter-institutional operation to strengthen security. Aside from increasing security patrols in growing areas, the new police chief said they are starting their work in the Traffic Department to curb officer extortion.

The Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection (SSPyPC) led the security operation through various strategic points in the municipality to strengthen crime prevention and deterrence efforts.

Members of the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) and SSPyPC personnel participated in the joint operation. During the operation, security forces conducted preventive patrols in areas of growth. Authorities reported that these types of security patrols will continue to be carried out.

Security patrols in growing neighborhoods have already begun.

The priority objective of Edgar Aguilar Rico, appointed as the new Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection of Tulum last week, will be to protect tourism, he said.

Rico says he will also put an end to extortion by police officers, especially traffic officers. The new police chief revealed that he had been in the city for a month before being sworn in and had already conducted field research and is informed of crime “heat maps.”

The official, originally from Chiapas, said he understands the importance of tourism which is why they will work across all areas and departments to protect the industry.

Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón said that another priority will be preventing extortion, which will require changes, since police will not be allowed to extort tourists or citizens. With that, Traffic will be the first area they review as part of this objective.

The Mayor also announced that the municipality will be hiring more officers and that the C2 Centre, which is still in its initial phase, will include a second phase of additional cameras and software. The second phase, he said, will begin next month and take four to six months to complete.

On July 2, Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo led the swearing-in of Edgar Aguilar Rico. He is the new Secretario de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) for the municipality of Tulum.
