Tulum mayor swears in new Secretario de Seguridad Ciudadana to replace murdered predecessor

Tulum, Q.R. — A new head for Tulum Public Security and Citizen Protection has been sworn in after the murder of José Roberto Rodríguez Bautista. On Wednesday, Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo led the swearing-in of Edgar Aguilar Rico. He is the new Secretario de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) for the municipality of Tulum.

Edgar Aguilar Rico has been recruited to replace the former SSC head Captain José Roberto Rodríguez Bautista who was shot to death in a planned ambush outside his home March 22.

Mayor Castañón Trejo says the new police commander is from the state of Chiapas and has a solid academic background with degrees in public security and law and a specialized degree in Adversarial Criminal Procedure.

He also has extensive experience in operational, tactical and management roles with previous positions that include head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Tuxtla Gutiérrez Intelligence Unit and Inspector General of the Tactical Analysis Unit of the Citizen Force State Police in the same Chiapas department.

He has worked in the Emergency 9-1-1 Response System before being named Municipal Public Security Director in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, and then Director of Municipal Transit in the same city. He served as chief inspector, in charge of the Tactical Analysis Unit before assuming his new position in Tulum.

Upon taking office, Aguilar Rico stated that his priority will be to restore social peace and citizen confidence in security institutions.

“Tulum is a world-class tourist destination. The most important thing is to regain trust and strengthen institutional presence so that people can live peacefully and visitors feel safe,” he said Wednesday.
