Cancun, Q.R. — An adult sea turtle found with a cracked shell continues to be cared for by medical specialists. The reptile was placed into federal care September 11 after reports of an injured sea turtle along a Cancun beach.
The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) says they treated the shell at the time of recovery and that the turtle remains in their care while receiving medical treatment.
The rescue was made Friday in coordination with the General Directorate of Ecology of Benito Juárez (Cancun) who attended to the rescue of a white sea turtle in the Cancun Hotel Zone.
“After its rescue, the specimen was transferred to a Wildlife Conservation Management Unit (UMA), where it receives medical care to aid its recovery,” the Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (Profepa) said.
As part of the initial care, specialists treated a wound on the shell and provided the sea turtle with food. A general medical examination and the collection of samples to assess its metabolic status will be carried out during the week.
“The results of these studies will allow experts to know more precisely the health conditions of the turtle and define the care measures that are necessary to promote its recovery,” the agency added.
Profepa will continue to monitor the case in coordination with the participating authorities and specialists, with the aim of ensuring that the specimen receives adequate care during its recovery process.
