Lightening strike confirmed cause of Cozumel power outage

Cozumel, Q.R. — The Sunday night blackout on the island of Cozumel was due to a lightening strike. Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama confirmed the strike Monday that left “most” of the island without power.

According to Governor Lezama, a CFE substation was hit by a bolt of lightening late Sunday evening. Lezama said approximately 66 percent of those affected had their power restored within the hour. The remaining 34 percent had their electricity restored after around two hours.

“Lightning damaged a substation. About 66 percent of Cozumel had power restored in approximately one hour, while the remaining 34 percent was restored in the following two hours,” she explained Monday.

She confirmed that electricity has been operating at 100 percent since. On Sunday night, at least nine areas of the island were left in the dark after a sudden cut in power. Cozumel Mayor José Luis Cachón reported on the mass power outage Sunday night saying the issue was in the hands of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) before confirming full restoration of the island’s electricity several hours later.
