Tulum, Q.R. — After five months in business, a new grocery store in the town of Tulum suffered a fire. Early Tuesday, firemen were sent to the Soriana Supermarket on Cobá Avenue in response to a report of a fire.

The fire was spotted by on-duty security guards around 3:00 a.m. in the form of smoke emanating from a door. Tulum firemen arrived to a large blaze of flames shooting out of the building. The fire originated in the rear of the building where electrical installations, a generator and storage tanks are located. Municipal Police cordoned off the area due to the risk of possible explosions.
At 9:00 a.m., members of the Tulum Fire Department were still at the scene cooling the burned area. The fire was contained and stopped from spreading to the rest of the store.

Paramedics were at the scene, although there were no injuries reported in the early morning blaze. According to initial reports from Civil Protection and the Fire Department, the fire was detected early and quickly brought under control. Municipal Civil Protection personnel were awaiting analysis to determine its cause.

The new 550 million peso grocery store opened its doors to Tulum residents in early December, 2024. It had been operational for approximately five months at the time of the fire.
