City removes 500 tons of illegally dumped garbage from Cancun neighborhood

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta supervised the closure of an illegal dump in Real Las Quintas that had accumulated hundreds of tons of garbage. The site was cleared of debris for a second time and permanently shut as a clandestine residential dump.

As a continuation of the commitment to eradicate clandestine dumps in the city to maintain public health and protect the environment, Mayor Peralta supervised the closure of an illegal dumping site in the Real Las Quintas subdivision, in Supermanzana 202, which was previously cleaned with a junk removal brigade.

Mayor Peralta emphasized that the clandestine landfill, which had accumulated approximately 500 tons of garbage, was cleared with trucks and machinery and closed to continue transforming Cancun.

“I ask all Cancun residents once again to be responsible and take care of our environment, to take care of our green areas which are not developed or urbanized, but are natural areas that we must protect and care for, keeping clean for everyone,” she said.

After the site was cleaned, a banner was placed urging residents not to litter and, if necessary, to report any misconduct to SIRESOL at the WhatsApp number: 998 353 2990.

The mayor was accompanied by the Director of the Cancun Comprehensive Solid Waste Solution (Siresol) Franntz Johann Ancira Martínez. Peralta verified the removal, clearing and general cleaning of the area as well as the painting of two concrete palapas on the sidewalks of Quinta Los Gavilanes Street.

The effort was made Tuesday by approximately 30 workers from Siresol with the support of Cancun Public Services personnel for tree pruning.

“The Siresol team is currently rehabilitating this space which is a small park,” Ancira Martínez said. “This is a superblock that the neighbors asked us to come and work on during the Cancun Nos Une (Cancun Unites Us) events.”

The city of Cancun began the clandestine crackdown on illegal residential dumping in 2024. Citizens caught tossing garbage onto public property are arrested and fined an average of 8,000 pesos. The crackdown is part of the efforts to curb the ‘accepted’ practice tossing of garbage onto public spaces.

Earlier this year, the city reported knowing of at least 490 illegal dumping sites across Cancun used by residents for ease of throwing household garbage and other unwanted items.
