Cancun, Q.R. — In three months, Cancun residents have reported 490 incidents of illegal dumping in green areas. On Friday, Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta verified the full operation of the city’s Green Units to eradicate clandestine dumping.

As part of the strengthening of the attention and eradication of clandestine dumps in the city, Mayor Peralta visited the Monitoring Center for Green Units of Comprehensive Solution for Solid Waste Cancún (Siresol) to learn in real time the operating method of the supervisors in the city.
According to Peralta, in just three months of operation, the Green Units have attended to 490 citizen reports.
“We are closely following up on the entire Green Units project at the Siresol Monitoring Center. We watched a dump truck in flagrante delicto dumping different types of waste in a green area.
“The inspectors were there. They all have video surveillance cameras. They are doing the live broadcast and doing the follow-up so that we can completely eradicate the clandestine dumps in our city,” said the Mayor.
From the facilities of the agency, she highlighted that the staff has body cameras with geolocation to verify the actions of the elements from the monitoring center as well as to record in flagrante the environmental crimes that are committed every day.
Ana Paty Peralta congratulated the workers for their tireless work in favor of the well-being of the citizens, since thanks to the implementation of the Green Units, they conduct patrols on different avenues and streets of the city, avoiding and addressing the creation of clandestine garbage dumps.

The Mayor has asked the people of Cancun to make correct use of the final destination of solid waste to avoid contamination.

People caught dumping are held by Green Units personnel for arrest by Municipal Officers followed by an average fine of 8,000 pesos, which is handed down by a Cancun judge. To date, the program is only operating in Cancun, however, authorities are looking into expanding it into other municipalities around the state.
