Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A collision between a navy vessel and a ferry at Isla Mujeres is being blamed on a mechanical failure. On Thursday, the bow of a Mexican Navy vessel was severely damaged when it hit the side of an Ultramar ferry.

According to the Mexican Navy, the incident happened Thursday afternoon during an approach maneuver to the dock of the Fifth Naval Region. The Navy vessel was approaching the dock when it hit the side of the moored Ultramar ferry.
The Mexican Navy issued an official statement reporting the maritime accident involved the Coastal Patrol Vessel ARM Uxmal (P-335) which collided with an ultra-high-capacity cargo ship during an arrival maneuver in Isla Mujeres.
According to Navy, the incident occurred when the naval unit was approaching the dock of the Fifth Naval Region and experienced a possible failure in its clutch system, a situation that would have caused the unintentional contact with the other vessel.
There were no injuries reported.
Maritime safety protocols were activated and coordination was established with the relevant authorities to conduct a technical assessment of the damage and determine the exact cause of the event, they said.

The Navy reported that the investigation is ongoing, and that the result of specialized expert analyses will confirm whether the mechanical failure preliminarily detected was the direct cause of the accident.
