Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Two drivers were seriously injured after a head-on collision along a section of Riviera Maya highway. The two Jetta cars crashed into one another along the Federal 307 Saturday morning.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene shortly before 8:00 a.m. where they found two destroyed private vehicles. The accident happened approximately 20 kilometers south of the city of Playa del Carmen.
According to initial reports, one of the drivers was attempting a U-turn when they lost control and drove over the central median and into the opposite lane. It was there they met the oncoming car.
Motorists reported the 7:50 a.m. crash to emergency services after the U-turning vehicle collided head-on with the other vehicle.
Both cars were destroyed by the impact. Emergency personnel rescued the two drivers and transported them to a hospital in critical condition.

National Guard Highways secured the area and coordinated the removal of the vehicles. The drivers involved in the crash have not been identified.
