Judge sentences five for 2022 beating death of Guatemalan man

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Five men have been sentenced for their roles in the 2022 murder of a Guatemalan man. State Attorney General Raciel López Salazar reported an Oral Trial Judge issued a guilty verdict Monday.

All five have been sentenced to 37 years and six months for aggravated homicide.

Ramón Hernández Hernández, Cristóbal Montejo Cruz, Óscar Hernández Guillén, Melitón Cruz Álvarez and Fidencio Cruz Álvarez were found guilty for the November 10, 2022 murder.

According to López Salazar “on the aforementioned date at approximately 11:30 at night, the victim, of Guatemalan nationality was in a basement located on Fifth Avenue between 36th and 38th streets in the Centro neighborhood, in Playa del Carmen.

“At that location, the five men assaulted the victim, whose mouth they had previously gagged with gray tape. According to the investigation, Cristóbal and Óscar held him by the arms, while Fidencio, Melitón, and Ramón beat him with their hands and wooden boards, ultimately suffocating him.

“On November 11, Ramón, Fidencio, and Óscar removed the victim’s body wrapped in black plastic bags, loaded it into a vehicle, and then placed it in the trunk of another car, which they abandoned on 10th Avenue between 22nd and 24th Streets in the Gonzalo Guerrero neighborhood, where it was located hours later.”

López Salazar said each of the five convicted individuals were also fined 216,495 pesos, as well as 874,722.20 pesos for material damages.
