Tulum, Q.R. — A request has been made by Tulum City Council to request cell coverage along a highway dead zone. Jhonny Monsreal, the Tulum Secretary General, said the request has been made to the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT).
According to Monsreal, a formal request to the Secretaría de Infraestructura, Comunicaciones y Transportes (SICT) was made to address the lack of cell coverage on highway between Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Tulum.

He said the necessary arrangements have been made with federal authorities to ensure connectivity and safety along this heavily traveled stretch of road, a project that the municipality has been working on for more than two years.
“The dead zone is a priority for the municipality. There’s no cell phone service and it’s urgent to provide coverage along this stretch which is traveled by a large number of motorists every day,” he said.
Monsreal stressed that since the highway is federal infrastructure, the municipality relies on coordination with the SICT to address the connectivity gap which is considered a matter of public safety and emergency response. Tulum City Council is waiting for a formal response from the SICT to move forward and connect the stretch of highway dead zone.
In March, Javier Ayuso Sánchez, the Director of the Quintana Roo Institute of Innovation and Technology, said a section of the highway that connects Felipe Carrillo Puerto with Tulum was outfitted with Starlink antennas to enable Internet.
