City Council declares three days of mourning in death of Tulum Mayor

Tulum, Q.R. — Three days of mourning have been decreed in Tulum for the death of Marciano Dzul Caamal. A public funeral was held Monday morning in Tulum for its former Mayor, Marciano Dzul Caamal.

Dzul died Saturday morning after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was being treated in a Monterrey hospital. Several days earlier, he had participated in a City Council meeting via video conference.

During the Monday morning funeral, First Councilor David Tah Balam, who lead the funeral said “He was with us until the last moment that his physical resistance allowed him.”

On Monday, Tulum City Council declared three days of mourning on March 6, 7 and 8. The council was present for the public funeral in Dos Aguas Park, as was his family, hundreds of citizens, dignitaries and Governor Mara Lezama, who also remembered the legacy of Dzul Caamal.

Likewise, Dzul Caamal’s wife, Ileana Canul de Dzul, expressed a few words in memory of the mayor, whom she described as a simple man who deeply loved Tulum.

Honor guards were held, headed by the governor and the representatives of the three powers of the state, as well as family members, mayors of Quintana Roo, the armed forces and local deputies.

His public tribute ended with one minute of cheers and applause. During the ceremony, his wife, Ileana Canul de Dzul, remembered the life and work of her husband.

She said he was an exceptional husband and an exemplary father. “A simple man without lyrics who was despised by many, but who was better than many with titles,” she said.
