Canadian tourist injured during collapse of Playa del Carmen condo balcony

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A Canadian tourist was seriously injured after falling from a balcony when its railing collapsed. The man sustained injuries after falling from a height of more than two meters Saturday night.

The accident happened at a condominium in the Zazil-Há neighborhood of Playa del Carmen at around 11:30 p.m. An ambulance was called to Anáh Playa del Carmen on 14 Bis Street and 20th Avenue Saturday night.

The man’s crash through the side of the balcony was heard by both on-site staff and residents who called emergency services.

According to initial reports, the man was a condo guest and was leaning on the side of one of the building’s balconies when it suddenly gave way. He fell several meters to the ground below.

Civil Protection personnel along with firefighters, paramedics and municipal public safety officers arrived at the condo in response to the emergency 9-1-1 call.

Paramedics transferred the injured man to hospital January 10, 2026

The area was cordoned off to facilitate the emergency vehicles and an ambulance who removed the injured Canadian guest on a stretcher. Paramedics assessed him prior to his ambulance transfer to hospital, determining he may have suffered a leg fracture.

Civil Protection authorities conducted a preliminary inspection of the collapsed balcony to determine the possible cause. Rooms with similar balconies have already been inspected. A more thorough inspection of the building is expected this week.

Last week, another Canadian tourist was injured after suffering a fall inside a Playa del Carmen hotel. The 60 year old hotel guest fell Friday morning inside the Luciana Hotel and Beach Club. Authorities did not say how the man fell. He was transferred to hospital for medical attention.
