Tulum, Q.R. — Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo says the municipality has added another free beach access point to its list of more than a dozen. He said the added beach access area is in response to citizen demands.

“Access to the sea has become a legitimate demand of the people, a demand we listened to and that is why we have confirmed the opening of a new access,” he said. “Tulum is transforming and it’s doing so for and by its people,” he said in a video Saturday.
The additional free beach access point was made available in a coordinated effort between the municipality and Zofemat (the Federal Maritime Zone).
Juan Antonio Garza, the Municipal Director of Zofemat (Zona Federal Marítima) says the new access area is located near the Mirador Templo in the Jaguar National Park and will be open for public access as of April 14.

According to Garza, they will continue working with the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanap) and the Center for Environmental Culture to allow for additional beach access areas.
There are currently 15 beach access points in the municipality of Tulum. In February, Mayor Castañón Trejo said that in response to citizen demand, he was working on opening three additional points.

In February he said City Council was working with hotels in the coastal area for public beach access. At the time, he said talks were in the works to open one or two public access points in the coastal zone.
