Tulum, Q.R. — Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo says City Council is working with hotels in the coastal area for public beach access. He says talks are in the works to open one or two public access points in the coastal zone.

Castañón Trejo says he is confident of being able to reach an agreement with the hotel sector saying “there is a lot of commitment and will on their part.”
The mayor reports that for several weeks they have been coordinating with the state government and in particular, with Conanp (Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas) and Sedena (Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional) personnel to allow public access.
“First we managed to get locals to not pay with their INE. Now it is also allowed with residence cards that we issue,” said Castañón Trejo.

“We are moving forward and with this coordination, we will reach a positive agreement so that everyone is happy,” he said.

Castañón Trejo clarified that the City Council of Tulum is only an intermediary and cannot make enforcements since the issue of public beach access points belongs to the judicial federation.
