Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Another snapped electric pole has left another seaside town without power. On Sunday, a concrete CFE pole that collapsed under its own weight left a section of Isla Mujeres in the dark.
Several blocks of a central residential area of the island experienced an electrical power cut when the pole broke. Two transformers were taken down with the snapped pole.
The incident happened early Sunday to a pole on Rueda Medina Avenue that left the center, Caridad del Cobre, Salina Grande, Salina Chica, lower part of La Gloria, Sac-Bajo and Punta Sur without electricity.
According to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), only 40 users were affected by the interruption.
Strong winds are being factored into the collapse of the pole as well as felling of a light pole in La Gloria.
In March, CFE personnel were seen on the island making repairs to some of the more-weather worn poles. The repairs came after a young girl received stiches in her head when a piece of lose concrete broke free from a pole and hit her.
Last week, a collapsed CFE pole in Akumal left dozens of residents and businesses without electricity. More than two dozen were left without electricity after a concrete pole snapped. The old pole, which was rusted through to its rebar, snapped about mid-way down from its own weight. Power was fully restored the following day.
