Additional Cancun lifeguards being hired to cover upcoming holidays

Cancun, Q.R. — Additional lifeguards are being hired and trained to work on Riviera Maya beaches for the upcoming holiday season. Given recent drownings in Cancun, Civil Protection says they will increase the number of lifeguards on their beaches.

Antonio Riveroll Ribbon, the Director of Civil Protection for Cancun, reported that as a result of these events, they plan to hire at least 10 additional lifeguards. The new hires will be added to the 30 they currently have for the city of Cancun in addition to other emergency services that respond to beach accidents.

He also said they are considering an extension of lifeguard hours on beaches since many accidents happen after the lifeguards leave their stations at 5:00 p.m.

In Cancun, beaches reported for having the most accidents include Playa Marlyn, Gaviotas and Playa Delfines, all of which have strong currents.
