Cozumel, Q.R. — The death toll in a late night Cozumel car accident has risen to two. Early Friday morning, a home security camera captured the moment a speeding car slammed into the side of a concrete building.

The corner of the building was shattered by the impact. The car was crumpled into a mass heap of metal. A front seat passenger was killed after being thrown from the car. Two people from inside, a man and woman, were seriously injured. One of them has since died.
According to a statement from Cozumel Police, the accident happened on 30th Avenue and 7th Street South in downtown San Miguel around 3:00 a.m. The driver was traveling 30th Avenue at an extremely high rate of speed at the time of the accident.
His 23 year old front seat passenger was killed when he was ejected from the vehicle seconds before impact. The driver was found with his leg pinned under the steering wheel. A female passenger in the back seat was seriously injured.
Municipal Police, Civil Protection and island firemen attended to the scene in response to reports of the accident. Firemen used the jaws of life to free the trapped driver.
“Friday morning a serious accident was attended to that occurred on 30th Avenue and 7th Street South of the downtown neighborhood in which one person lost his life and two were injured.

“The authorities of the Public Security Department became aware of the events and through Civil Protection and paramedics immediately attended to the people they found at the scene.
“After a strong rescue operation, they managed to get a person out of a Chevrolet Sonic vehicle without license plates, who was found with his leg pinned inside the unit, to be sent to medical service along with a woman who had serious injuries.
“A 23-year-old young man lost his life at the scene after being thrown from the unit. Personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office also arrived at the scene for the corresponding proceedings,” Policia Cozumel reported in a statement.

Video from the accident shows the car slamming into a CFE pole and then building. The crash sent sparks flying from the top of the pole. The female passenger has since died. Police have not commented on a cause of the crash.
