Two Cozumel fires believed intentional and related

Cozumel, Q.R. — Two Cozumel fires believed intentionally set and related are being investigated. Early Tuesday morning, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the offices of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo).

Around that same time, an island tow truck was reported burning. Local media have hinted that the fires may be intimidation tactics by mototaxi drivers who have been in dispute with Imoveqroo for months. These disputes have lead to numerous mototaxis being towed.

The attack against the Imoveqroo office in Cozumel happened early Tuesday morning. Reports say a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the facade of the building, leaving its metal door scorched.

Around the same time, Cozumel firemen were at the scene of a tow truck fire. Part of what appeared to be a Molotov cocktail was photographed on the street near the front of the burned tow truck.

On Monday, an Imoveqroo street operation lead to the seizure of several mototaxi units. The units were removed from city streets for operating illegally. They were towed to the Municipal Police corral.

On Tuesday morning, representatives of the COR 80 motorcycle taxi union offered a press conference to distance themselves from the recent vandalism attacks while saying that progress is being made between them and Imoveqroo.
