Cozumel, Q.R. — Police say two CJNG cartel members have been arrested in relation to the fire violence on the island of Cozumel. On Monday, state SSC (Secretariat of Citizen Security) reported on the arrests of Ángel Alonso “N” and Eduardo “N” who “were arrested as suspected drug traffickers.”

In their Monday statement, the SSC (Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana) of Quintana Roo said the men are CJNG members and connected to two fires Sunday. The fires they have been “linked to” include an OXXO convenience store and the Bodega Aurrera.
“The detainees are members of the CJNG cartel and are linked to the arson attacks on the Bodega Aurrera store located on Calle 13 Sur, between Calle 75 Sur and Calle 85 Sur, and the Oxxo convenience store in Alta Mar, located on Prolongación José María Morelos at the intersection with Avenida Cozumel,” the SSC reported.
However on Sunday, State Civil Protection said the Bodega Aurrera fire was the result of a short circuit in the kitchen. The cause of the fire was a public “informative” that was reposted by Cozumel Civil Protection early Sunday afternoon.

The SSC said Monday that “during patrols, officers observed two men exchanging multiple small, clear plastic bags containing a green, dried herb resembling marijuana.
“The incident occurred on an unnamed dirt road between the transversal highway and Calle Alcatraz in the Miraflores neighborhood of Cozumel, where the corresponding inspection was carried out.
“They were found in possession of two (ball) caps, 16 small, clear, Ziploc-type plastic bags containing a green, dried herb resembling marijuana, two cell phones, and two voter ID cards. They were turned over to the State Attorney General’s Office.”
The arrests of the two CJNG cartel members involved the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC), the Secretariat of the Navy, the Secretariat of National Defense and the Cozumel Municipal Police.

There has not been any public comment from Policia Cozumel or Bomberos Cozumel regarding the discrepancy in reports between Civil Protection and the SSC regarding the said cause of the Bodega Aurrera fire.
On Sunday, an island OXXO was intentionally set on fire during a nation-wide retaliatory attack after news of a CJNG leader’s death.

The Ministry of National Defense reported Sunday that Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, alias “El Mencho”, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed.
He died from injuries sustained during a federal operation in the state of Jalisco. After news broke of his death, 20 states around the country reported retaliatory violence by CJNG cartel members.
One of those states was Quintana Roo.
