Electrical fault confirmed cause of Cozumel Bodega Aurrera fire

Cozumel, Q.R. — State Civil Protection says a supermarket fire in Cozumel Sunday was due to an electrical fault in the bakery. On Sunday morning, the rear portion of the inside of a Bodega Aurrera branch in Cozumel burst into flames.

The fire looked as though it had started in an isle. February 22, 2026.

The fire happened at a location in the Maravilla neighborhood of the island where, what looked like, an entire aisle was in flames.

Company employees immediately evacuated customers while they waited for the fire department to arrive. A dense column of smoke was visible from several points on the island due to the size of the fire.

Cozumel emergency services evacuated the neighboring Sam Club store and nearby homes as a precaution in the event the fire spread. The area was cordoned off while firemen controlled the scene and put out the fire.

In a statement, Civil Protection said “a fire caused by a short circuit was reported in the kitchen area of a supermarket in the municipality of Cozumel.

The Sunday fire was caused by an electrical fault in the bakery. February 22, 2026.

“Emergency teams, including the Mexican Navy, Civil Protection, Municipal Police and firefighters were on scene working to extinguish the fire. No injuries have been reported. Stay informed through official channels.”
