Tulum taxi drivers demand release of union leader arrested for murder

Tulum, Q.R. — Tulum taxi drivers protested the arrest of their union leader Friday along the federal highway. Hundreds of unionized vehicles were parked along the road from Tulum to Akumal slowing traffic.

The drivers were protesting the arrest of Eliazar “N”, the Tulum leader of the Tiburones del Caribe Taxi Union, who was picked up the day before in relation to homicides. During their protest, they demanded his release.

Vehicles began arriving outside the Archaeological Zone of Tulum around 1:00 p.m. The long line of parked vehicles stretched for more than 20 kilometers, affecting traffic heading toward Cancun.

According to a statement issued by the State Attorney General (FGE), Eliazar “N” was taken into custody Thursday afternoon on an arrest warrant.

He is believed involved in four murders-attempted murders. Police did not provide details surrounding those homicides. It is not clear why the taxi drivers were requesting his release.
