Weapons and murder charges: Tulum taxi union leader and active councilor arrested from city street

Tulum, Q.R. — The General Secretary of the Tiburones del Caribe Taxi Union in Tulum has been arrested along with an active elected Quintana Roo councilor. Both men were taken into custody on weapons charges Thursday afternoon from their vehicle.

Since their arrests, the State Attorney General (FGE) has reported one of the detained men being related to four murders. Eliazar “N”, the Tulum leader of the Tiburones del Caribe Taxi Union, is looking at murder and attempted murder charges.

In a public statement late Thursday, the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) reported on “the capture of Eliazar “N”, who is related to acts that probably constitute the crimes of qualified homicide and attempted homicide against four people whose identity is reserved.”

At the time of their arrests, “both subjects were found to have a .380 caliber firearm,” the FGE said.

The second man, Juan Manuel “N”, reportedly worked closely on Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón’s recent re-election campaign. The FGE has not detailed additional charges against him other than being found in possession of a loaded gun and in the company of an alleged criminal.

Both men were taken into custody on the same day a judge issued a warrant for their arrests. The FGE has not provided information surrounding the murders and attempted murders Eleazar “N” is being investigated for.

Eliazar “N” also heads the Frente Único de Trabajadores del Volante (FUTV), an organization that brings together the 19 taxi unions in the state.

Their arrests were made the day after another Tulum beach club shooting left one dead. The FGE has not said if the events are related.
