Tulum police arrest three and thwart attempted land invasion

Tulum, Q.R. — Three people were arrested for attempting to invade land in the community of Francisco Uh May in the municipality of Tulum. The three men were taken into police custody by Tulum police Sunday after citizen reports.

José Roberto Rodríguez Bautista, the head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Tulum, said the plan to take over the land was thwarted thanks to the collaboration of the residents and the owners of the land.

A group of approximately 50 had arrived to take over a section of land at the edge of town for personal living purposes, which would have become another irregular settlement.

Rodríguez Bautista said elements of the municipal police in coordination with the Navy acted quickly to prevent the group from taking over the land. He also said that the inhabitants of the transition zone, who also joined the intervention, played a crucial role in the failed attempt at dispossession.

The SSC head confirmed that as a result of the joint intervention, three people were arrested on charges of attempted dispossession and are currently in the custody of local authorities.

“Three people were arrested and placed at the disposal of the competent authority. They were in the town of Francisco Uh May inside a property that belonged to a person from that town. A large number of people with machetes, picks and shovels, were there because they had been promised a series of things including land.”
