Tulum, Q.R. — A dozen Cuban nationals were taken into custody by National Guard Thursday after making landfall on a Tulum beach. National Guard located the group near South Tulum beach around 11:00 a.m.
According to initial reports, the group of 12 had left Boca de Galafre, Cuba, bound for the United States, but were swept in a different direction by currents. The group of 12 Cubans arrived at Tulum in a handmade boat made of wood and polyfoam.
Local authorities from the Coordination Group for the Construction of Peace, headed by the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) of Tulum, in coordination with the National Guard and the Secretariat of the Navy, met the group Thursday morning.
The group of Cubans said they were at sea more than a week before finally making landfall near the Tulum Hotel Zone.
Their Thursday morning arrival caught the attention of residents who alerted authorities. Once safe, the group of men and woman were placed at the disposal of the National Migration Institute (INM) to determine their legal status.
