Truck protest leaves Costa Maya drivers stranded

Costa Maya, Q.R. — A road block of industrial vehicles left a section of Costa Maya highway backed up Friday. Traffic was at a standstill for hours while a group of disgruntled truck drivers demanded payment for hauling Tren Maya ballast.

The protest was held in time with a regional visit by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, both of whom were in Campeche at the time of the roadblock.

The group of Transportistas Unidos organized the national protest Thursday claiming they have not been paid for ballast hauled.

State Secretary Cristina Torres Gómez says the group does not have debt with Sedena, who is in charge of the project. The protesting drivers are subcontractors who are likely owed money by individuals, making it a private issue.

“We cannot rule out that there is an individual who provided the service but has not paid the subcontracted company, but it is not a national issue,” she said.

Traffic in southern Quintana Roo was at a standstill during the protest.
