Akumal, Q.R. — UPDATED: The driver of a company vehicle was killed this morning in a two vehicle accident near the town of Akumal. A potato chip truck burst into flames after being thrown into a power pole during a collision with a bus.

The cargo truck and bus collided on a section of federal highway south of Akumal Tuesday morning. According to information gathered, the driver of the company truck was attempting to pass the bus at the time of the accident.
During the pass, the front of the bus collided with the rear of the truck, throwing the truck into a power pole. The truck caught fire almost immediately. The driver was trapped behind the wheel and died.
A second truck from the same company was following the first truck when the driver attempted to pass the bus. That driver was not injured.

The bus was a staff bus, transporting around a dozen workers to a Riviera Maya hotel at the time of the accident. Three people from the bus were transferred to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Others from the bus were treated roadside by paramedics for minor injuries including shock.

The two vehicles crashed into one another on the highway approximately four kilometers south of Akumal.

The trapped driver that died has been identified as 41 year old Ginger “A”, who also served as a volunteer paramedic with the PDC Red Cross.
National Guard Highways diverted backed up traffic around the scene while firemen worked to extinguish the burning truck and paramedics transferred the injured to hospitals.

Local authorities are still investigating the official cause of the accident.
UPDATED March 5, 2026: New information reveals that the accident happened when the bus was passing the trucks. The two company chip trucks were pulled over on the shoulder of the highway when the rear truck was struck from behind by the bus.
As the bus driver approached the pulled-over vehicles, he clipped the rear of the back (second) parked truck.
The bus was traveling at full speed at the time of impact, pushing the truck into a pole that resulted in it catching fire. The driver of that truck was killed. The driver of the other company chip truck, parked in front, was not injured.
It is not known if the trucks were properly pulled off the highway or how the driver of the bus hit the truck. There is no official report on who was at fault.
