Three arrests made related to dead woman found in Cancun shopping cart

Cancun, Q.R. — Three people have been taken into custody after the finding of a body in a shopping cart earlier this month. All three, police say, are believed involved in the death of the woman found left near a public park.

The State Attorney General (FGE) said in a statement that police “executed an arrest warrant against three people, two males and one female, for their probable involvement in events that could constitute the crime of femicide.”

The FGE has identified those in custody as Freddy “N”, alias “Barbas”, Mario Francisco “N”, alias “Paco” and Estefanía Iyujari “N”, alias “Fanny”.

The events for which police are investigating them “occurred on January 4, 2026, following the report of the discovery of a woman’s body, wrapped in a sheet inside a shopping cart near a park located in Superblock 68,” the FGE reported.

“Initial investigations indicate that on January 1st of this year, the now-detained individuals were at their home located on 9th Street at the corner of Francisco I. Madero Avenue in Superblock 65 when the victim arrived with other people and they spent time together.

“Later, Estefanía Iyujari “N” argued with the victim, physically assaulted her and then suffocated her. Estefanía Iyujari “N” later carried the unconscious victim’s body to the ground floor of the house.

“At that moment, Freddy “N” noticed that the victim was still breathing so the woman ordered him to “finish the job.” Later, the man suffocated the victim, killing her.

“After the events, Mario Francisco “N” transported the victim’s body in a green, double-basket supermarket cart to a park, where he abandoned it and subsequently left the place.”

Police said that based on the autopsy, the victim showed signs of sexual abuse. The cause of death was mechanical asphyxiation by strangulation.

Police also reported that Estefanía Iyujari “N” was recently captured on José López Portillo Avenue between Maracaibo and 23rd Streets for drug dealing.
