Tulum, Q.R. — Police say two men have been arrested in Playa del Carmen for assault and aggravated homicide in Tulum. The pair were initially picked up by Investigative Police for drug dealing, but now, authorities say they are connected to the three weekend shootings at a Tulum cenote.
On Monday, authorities said Fernando Jonathan “N” and Adán Osvaldo “N” are in custody “for their probable participation in acts possibly constituting the crime of aggravated homicide against a male victim of Argentine nationality as well as for the injuries caused to two other people.”
Three men were shot in the parking lot of a Tulum cenote on January 9. Two were injured. One died. Police have said that the shooting was not related to the electronic music festival that had been held the night before when another man was shot and killed in an unrelated shooting. His body was found early that same morning on a dirt road.

Police say that the two people injured by bullets at the cenote were security, both employees. A third person who was shot several times, died. He has been identified as a 37 year old Argentinian citizen.
“Fernando Jonathan “N” and Adán Osvaldo “N” were arrested for drug dealing and who, according to the first investigations, would have killed an Argentine citizen and injured two other men with a firearm who worked as security employees of a cenote, unrelated to a musical event that was taking place in Tulum,” police said.
All three were shot in the parking lot of the cenote. At the scene, forensic experts secured spent 9mm caliber shell casings. Police said the two suspects in custody were identified using nearby security cameras.
Police have reported that the shooting was not related to the electronic music festival and have speculated that the motive was drug related.
“Initial investigations link the detainees to a criminal group that generates violence in Tulum, dedicated to the sale of narcotics, so the line of investigation that the Prosecutor’s Office is following in this case has to do with the crime of drug dealing,” they said.

The afternoon shooting of three men at the Tulum cenote on January 9 was the second fatal shooting in the town of Tulum in 12 hours.
