Suspect accused of participating in blackmail of Playa del Carmen business owner arrested in Cancun

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A man who tried to blackmail a business owner out of 300,000 pesos is in custody after an arrest in Cancun. Nicolás “N” was reported for vehicle theft and trying to blackmail a Playa del Carmen business owner.

On Friday, a Playa del Carmen judge issued a formal indictment against Nicolás “N” for his probable participation in acts possibly constituting the crime of extortion, police said.

Police reported that Nicolás “N”, with two other men, met the victim in a shopping mall parking lot in December of 2025. While there, the victim was connected with the boss of Nicolás “N” by telephone.

Police reported that during the conversation, the boss “threatened the victim with his personal data and demanded the amount of 300,000 pesos in exchange for not causing harm to his family and business.”

The meeting was set up in a parking lot between avenues 115 and CTM. When the call finished, the three men “then stole the victim’s vehicle as part of the extortion payment. Furthermore, the individuals identified themselves as members of a criminal group responsible for violence in the state.”

The victim filed a complaint which resulted in an arrest warrant being issued against Nicolás “N”. Investigative Police picked him up in Supermanzana 337 in Cancun over the weekend.

He has since been transferred to the Municipal Detention Center of Playa del Carmen and ordered to remain in custody during his trial.
