Cozumel, Q.R. — Cozumel Ecology personnel rescued a trapped adult loggerhead from a rocky area. The rescue was made Monday in response to a citizen report on the eastern part of the island.
Personnel from the Cozumel Ecology Department were deployed to the San Martín area where the citizen reported seeing the sea turtle trapped among the rock formations.
Upon arriving at the site, the Ecology team identified a loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), weighing approximately 150 kilograms, stranded and unable to return to the sea on its own.
Following protocols, staff performed the necessary maneuvers to release the turtle, ensuring no harm was caused. A visual assessment was subsequently conducted to rule out injuries, confirming that the turtle was in good condition before it was safely returned to its natural habitat.

“These types of actions reaffirm the Municipal Government’s firm commitment to the protection and conservation of marine fauna, especially during the turtle nesting season, which represents an environmental priority in Cozumel,” City Hall said in a statement.
