State Vest Law set for mid-year when final drafts submitted

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Imoveqroo is still working on a final draft of the state’s upcoming new motorcycle laws. The Vest Law, as it’s been called, is still being drafted says the Director of the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo).

Rafael Hernández Kotasek of Imoveqroo

Rafael Hernández Kotasek, the Director of the Instituto de Movilidad del Estado de Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo), says once legal, its implementation will be gradual over the couse of several months.

He says state officials are still determining who will be required to wear the numbered vest and helmet combination and who will be exempt. Hernández Kotasek says only motorcycles of certain engine sizes will be required to wear the numbered helmet and vest.

He says the state is also still working out details on if the vest and numbered stickers will be free or if drivers will have to pay for them since motorcycle passengers will also be required to wear them.

According to the Imoveqroo Director, there are more than 400,000 motorcycles registered in Quintana Roo. He says the rate of user growth toward motorcycles in the state is very high. He explained that within Imoveqroo, they are working on creating an administrative unit specifically for motorcycle drivers.

While the initial Vest Law was set for publication in March, Hernández Kotasek says changes have been made and considerations added which will likely see the law come into effect sometime mid-year.
