State starts 183 million peso Isla Blanca road expansion project

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The Government of Quintana Roo has started a 183 million peso road expansion project. Governor Mara Lezama has announced the start of construction on the Isla Blanca highway on the Isla Mujeres mainland.

With an initial investment of over 183 million pesos, the new road will be expanded to four lanes. She said the new road will create 14,000 jobs, boost tourism and benefiting key areas such as Costa Mujeres and Punta Sam.

Lezama called this area “one of the most dynamic corridors in the Mexican Caribbean.”

Construction work to expand the current highway started over the weekend. May 10, 2026

The current road has a total length of 25 kilometers. This year, work will be carried out on the first and second phases totaling approximately 4.3 kilometers, with an investment exceeding 183 million pesos.

This includes earthworks, drainage works, public lighting, and an asphalt concrete roadway that expands its capacity from 2 to 4 lanes, integrating bike paths, sidewalks, and a central median.

“Isla Blanca is developing more and more,” Governor Lezama said. “This growth demands long-term planning with modern, safe, and organized connectivity.

That is why this project, which is being built with the support of President Claudia Sheinbaum, is a priority for the Government of Mexico to strengthen the development of Quintana Roo,” she explained.

According to the project, it will be executed by the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) in coordination with the State Government through the SEOP, and will be worked on by three companies from Quintana Roo, two from Cancun and one from Chetumal.

The first phase of the project will be completed in November. Its construction will generate approximately 14,000 jobs and allow for the daily circulation of up to 22,000 vehicles.

Governor Lezama said the road project will have a positive impact on key areas such as Costa Mujeres, Playa Mujeres, Punta Sam and the mainland area of Isla Mujeres who receive about 6 million visitors a year.

Mara Lezama explained that this project is building a future with greater connectivity, more development, and better opportunities for everyone.

Construction for the highway expansion was announced in October of 2024. The new Tourist Boulevard will help connect residents, workers and tourists between Cancun and Costa Maya, the busy tourist area of mainland Isla Mujeres.
